Financial Impact:

The funds for the requested action are a result of:  1) the California Animal Welfare Funders Collaborative (CAWFC) SN Grant and 2) forfeited and/or unclaimed spay/neuter deposits and civil penalties collected and held in account 431-301800.  Pursuant to California Food and Ag Code Section 30521(c), these funds can only be used for this type of activity.

Background Information:

On May 15, 2022, the Division of Animal Services was selected to receive a California Animal Welfare Funders Collaborative (CAWFC) grant in the amount of $9,750.  In keeping with the Division’s focus on the return to home for stray pets, this grant allowed Animal Services to offer a reduced price return to owner option for impounded dogs by spaying or neutering the dog at the time of return.  During FY 2022/23 a total of fifty (50) canines were altered using CAWFC grant funds ($6,500)

The grant period ended on June 30, 2023 and the unused grant funds were donated to the Animal Care Center by CAWFC to continue to offer reduced return to owner options until all funds have been expended.

For this FY 2023/24, during Quarter 1 and Quarter 2, twenty-three (23) canines were altered using CAWFC grant funds ($2,990)

During Quarter 3 of this FY 2023/24, an additional twelve (12) canines were altered using a combination of the remaining CAWFC grant funds ($260) and the Division’s Spay/Neuter Trust Account ($1,300)
