Background Information:

Ben’s Pond at the Red Bluff Recreation Area (RBRA) is a man-made pond that was originally constructed by volunteers in 1995.  The pond has been used for environmental education, kids’ fishing days and as a wildlife viewing location.  The water level has fallen in the pond through time.  California’s persistent drought as well as changes in the way the nearby Sacramento River is managed are the main causes of the lowered water level.  The pond has also become filled with sediment from bank erosion and dead foliage.  This material needs to be removed from the pond, and the pond needs to be dredged to restore its intended uses.

The United States Forest Service proposes the dredging of Ben’s Pond to remove sediment and increase depth and capacity.  The goal is to remove up to five vertical feet of sediment from the pond’s bottom.  The surface area of the pond is about 22,000 square feet (1/2 acre).  Up to 3,000 cubic yards of material may be removed from the pond.

The dredging of the pond will be accomplished using an excavator and a dump truck.  The dredged material will be taken via dump truck to a disposal area in the Red Bluff Recreation Area, which has been used to hold the tailings from prior dredging projects. The funds provided by the County will be used solely on a reimbursement basis for fuel to be used for the heavy equipment for the completion of the project.
