Financial Impact:
The estimated salary and benefits for FY 24/25 is $149,953.00.
Background Information:
The current Agriculture Commissioner Sealer of Weights & Measures is retiring on July 2, 2024. A recruitment was held to fill the anticipated vacancy and a candidate was selected by the Board of Supervisors. In the interim between the candidate selection and the incumbent’s retirement, the Board of Supervisors implemented a soft hiring freeze.
While it is recognized the County has a hiring freeze in place in an effort to prioritize the filling of vacant positions, having an Agriculture Commissioner to lead the Agriculture Department, as well as ensure the protection and promotion of our agricultural community, is equally important and identifies as an essential need.
If approved, there will still be cost savings associated with this action because the incoming Agriculture Commissioner will be paid a lower salary than the incumbent. In addition, if this action is approved as proposed, the result will be an additional vacancy within the Assistant Agriculture Commissioner Sealer of Weights & Measures position.
Failing to approve this action would leave the Department without a Department Head to provide oversight, general direction, and management of the overall day to day activities which could result in an increased liability to the County.
