Background Information:

In 2020 the Civil Grand Jury made a request to extend their term due to circumstances related to COVID-19 causing delays in their investigation processes and to allow more time to fulfill their responsibilities in this role. Once approved, the subsequent Grand Juries have served on a calendar year rotation beginning in 2021.

Per Penal Code section 905.5(b), the Board of Supervisors may provide for an appropriate transition from calendar year to fiscal year not to exceed 18 months.

The 2024 Civil Grand Jury has requested to extend their term through June 30, 2025 and allow the rotation to return to a fiscal year term. They cited this will allow them to better track their own budget, attend scheduled trainings with other grand juries and allow for the drafting and completion of the final report outside of the holiday season. Judge Jonathan W. Skillman has written a letter in support of this transition.
