Financial Impact:
No Financial Impact.
Background Information:
Supervisor Tom Walker of District 2 introduced the matter, and Chair Hansen directed that it be added to the agenda. Given the timing of the Commission’s actions, it was necessary to issue the letter prior to its formal inclusion on the agenda.
The California Fish and Wildlife Commission has proposed revisions regarding regulations on the taking of coyotes. Tehama County and many other Northern California counties differ greatly from the more urban areas of California and should not be treated the same in a one-size-fits-all policy for any wildlife issue.
Due to the immensity of our landscape, significant coyote predation takes place beyond the ability of our producers to catch predators “in the act”. Federal grazing allotments can be thousands of acres in size. Coyote predation control must be both reactive and proactive. Any changes in these regulations would undoubtedly result in limiting our constituents’ ability to reduce predation on their herds, flocks, and working dogs when the opportunity arises.
