Financial Impact:
A portion of the funds are being transferred from the PG&E Settlement funds to the Coroner Budget for the purchase of a third gurney. The additional funds have been budgeted in the FY 2025/26 budget, with no additional impact on the General Fund.
Background Information:
Fire mitigation and public safety planning extend beyond suppression and prevention efforts and include preparedness for emergency response, fatality recovery, and post-incident investigation. In the event of structure fires, wildfires, vehicle fires, or other catastrophic incidents, coroners and medical personnel rely on specialized transport equipment, including gurneys, to safely recover and transport victims from hazardous environments. These operations are conducted in coordination with fire departments, law enforcement, emergency medical services, and fire investigators to preserve evidence, maintain responder safety, and ensure dignified handling of remains during high-risk incidents. Proper equipment and preparedness are especially important in rural and wildfire-prone regions where emergency resources may be limited, and incidents may involve difficult terrain, prolonged response times, or mass-casualty conditions.
Stryker is a global leader in medical technologies, and they provide quality, innovative products. These funds will be used to outfit the third coroner truck with its gurney lift. This item will be used to assist the coroners in daily duties and responsibilities, while significantly increasing staff safety.
The purchase of the gurney lift will greatly increase the staff safety standards and decrease the chance of potential work compensation claims while the coroners are moving decedents. The gurney includes features such as an equipment hook to prevent movement during transport, x-restraints to keep the decedent in place, adjustable height and a transport handle so the coroner can adjust the height as needed and is not having to lift more than necessary.
The coroner’s current vehicles are outfitted with these same Stryker products and have proven successful at completing tasks efficiently and safely.
