recommendation

a)                     Request approval of revisions to the classification specification of Sheriff’s Service Officer I and Sheriff’s Service Officer II, including a title change to Sheriff’s Service Officer I/II, effective 5/6/25

body

Financial Impact:

There is no financial impact associated with this request.

Background Information:

The Sheriff’s Office requests to revise the Sheriff’s Service Officer classification specification series. The minimum requirements of the classification specification of Sheriff’s Service Officer II currently indicate to qualify, the candidate must have one (1) year of experience as Sheriff’s Service Officer I. This language limits the Department’s ability to hire candidates who have not previously worked as a Sheriff’s Service Officer.  Therefore, the Department would like to revise the minimum qualifications thereby allowing one (1) year of responsible clerical experience involving legal terminology or record keeping functions equivalent to a Sheriff’s Service Officer I with Tehama County as qualifying experience. This revision would allow the Department to hire candidates at either level based on their qualifying work experience.

In addition, the Department would like to take the opportunity to revise the classifications to make the series flexibly staffed. This allows the Department to advance Sheriff’s Service Officer I incumbents to the higher-level class after gaining the knowledge, skills and experience required of Sheriff’s Service Officer II. Incumbents are not automatically promoted to the higher-level position.

There is no change to the current salary placements.

The Deputy Sheriffs’ Association (DSA) has been notified of the proposed revisions and an agreement has been reached.
