Financial Impact:

The funding source for this Agreement has been budgeted for FY2026/27 in the Coroners Professional/Special Services account, 2072-53230.

Background Information:

Dr. Purtzer provides valuable pathology services for non-forensic cases for the Coroner’s Office. This partnership allows the Coroner’s Office to obtain the necessary medical determinations and release decedents in a timely manner, helping to minimize delays and additional inconvenience for surviving family members.

The Sheriff’s Office also maintains a contract with a forensic pathologist who is utilized for criminal cases, in-custody deaths, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) cases, and most child death investigations. Because forensic pathologists are highly specialized, in greater demand, and generally more costly, the Sheriff’s Office wishes to maintain additional physicians who can provide pathology services for appropriate non-forensic cases. Utilizing physicians such as Dr. Purtzer for these cases supplements the County’s forensic pathology resources, helps manage costs, and ensures the Coroner’s Office can continue to process cases efficiently and provide timely services to families.

We would also like to request approval for the Purchasing Department to issue a PO for the outstanding invoices of $13,250.00 for the pathology services rendered from July - October 5, 2026.
