Financial Impact:
The funds for the requested action are a result of the 2026 Pet Lover's Spay and Neuter grant. There is no impact on the General Fund. Prior to the reimbursement of the grant, the funding will be sourced from the Division's regular operating budget. Budget adjustments for expenditures and reimbursement will be brought forth during the adopted budget.
Background Information:
On January 5, 2026, the Division of Animal Services submitted an application to the 2026 Pet Lover's Spay and Neuter Grant through the State of California, California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA.) The grant application detailed a proposal to provide additional access to spay/ neuter services for rural communities in Tehama and Glenn Counties, utilizing the Division's mobile veterinary unit. Due to the time constraints of the grant application deadline, the Division is seeking ratification of the previously submitted application.
On March 13, 2026, the Division was officially awarded the 2026 Pet Lover's Spay and Neuter Grant. The Division will use the grant funds to provide 825 additional spay/ neuter services to pets of community members residing in rural communities without a local veterinarian. Utilizing the Division's mobile veterinary unit, the Division will travel to these rural communities to provide spay/neuter surgeries for 575 cats and 250 dogs.
