Financial Impact:
The requested action if approved includes an annual increase of $21,813.47, which is currently covered by existing State allotment funds within Budget Unit 2023. However, the Sheriff's Office has verified that the State's funding cap is fixed and cannot be increased. As a result, although there is no fiscal impact on the General Fund this current fiscal year, the Board should anticipate a potential increase in General Fund requirements for this unit next year to sustain this increase in cost.

Background Information:
The Sheriff's Office is requesting approval to restructure the Court / Bailiff supervisor position by replacing the current Correctional Sergeant with a sworn Sergeant classification. The Department has historically underfilled the Deputy Sheriff allocations assigned to the Court / Bailiffs with Correctional Deputies which justified allocating a Correctional Sergeant as the unit's supervisor. However, because the Department now fills these allocations with sworn Deputy Sheriffs, the existing supervisory classification no longer aligns with the duties, scope of responsibility, or operational demands of the role.

Additionally, a sworn Sergeant would bring broader experience in key areas such as criminal investigations, tactical decision-making, and interagency coordination. This level of expertise is increasingly necessary in the courthouse environment, where incidents can escalate rapidly and require immediate command-level response.
